Remedy FAQ

All Remedy drinks contain no sugar, naturally because we brew our bevvies the old school way.

When brewing Remedy Kombucha, raw organic sugar is used as a key starter ingredient acting as food for the all important live cultures. During our 30-day long aged brewing process, all of this sugar is converted into healthy organic acids leaving no sugar (and we test each batch to make sure of it).

Remedy Sparkling Apple Cider Vinegar is made using organic apples (which as you know, contain sugar!). These apples are naturally fermented, and in this process all of the sugar is converted into organic acids, producing a delicious raw apple cider vinegar that has no sugar, naturally. We then pair this with the fiery, fresh ginger to make the most delicious ACV drink goin’ round.

We also carefully select all the natural ingredients we use for extra flavour, ensuring no sugar is added to any of our Remedy drinks.

There is no difference in the liquid goodness inside any of our types of packaging. Same recipe, same old school small-batch brewing process.

Erythritol is a naturally occurring nectar commonly found in pears, watermelons, grapes and other fermented products like wine, cheese and soy sauce. Both stevia and erythritol have been used as natural sweeteners in many parts of the world for hundreds of years.

Stevia is a plant that belongs to the chrysanthemum family, which grows in Paraguay and Brazil. It contains no fructose yet is 300 times sweeter than sugar. By adding a touch of stevia to our drinks, it allows us to truly provide you with a ‘gut-friendly’ drink that tastes super delicious.

You bet! We know lots of kids who have grown up enjoying kombucha (including Remedy Founders Sarah and Emmet’s own family) and many other types of fermented food and drinks.

Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers have been safely consuming fermented food and drinks for thousands of years. This includes kombucha. We test each and every batch to ensure it meets the highest food safety standards. As always, have a chat with your friendly health practitioner if in doubt.

Kombucha

We add a touch of organic stevia and organic erythritol (fermented glucose) at the end of the natural fermentation process. This adds back a touch of sweetness and balances out the flavors after we naturally brew out all of the sugar. Both the stevia and erythritol we use are 100% natural and certified organic.

We’re glad you asked. Kakadu plums are native to Australia and contain the most Vitamin C of any fruit in the whole world!

Someone once told us they’ll never try kombucha because they don’t like mushrooms, but that isn’t a reason not to try Remedy. While Kombucha is sometimes called ‘mushroom tea’, that is because of the SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) that floats on the surface. Kombucha is not made with mushrooms, but it is made with tea.

Remedy is now available in many national and independent retailers across Canada. Remedy Kombucha cans can be found in the cooler and our 4-packs can be found in the drink aisle (occasionally near energy drinks or juice), because with no sugar, we don’t have to be refrigerated. Use our store locator to find Remedy drinks near you.

While we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all prescription for how much kombucha you should drink, we do recommend incorporating Remedy kombucha into your daily diet to truly experience the benefits. Most of the team at Remedy has a can with each meal as it’s a super easy way to including something fermented and raw into your daily diet.

No way. We don’t pasteurize. Never have. Never will. While some foods and drinks labelled as live cultured or probiotic get that way thanks to dosed or added ingredients (after the cultures have died), we pride ourselves on the fact that our live, active cultures are from our brewing process! Kombucha has been around for thousands of years – we keep our recipe and fermentation process traditional, and our raw kombucha unpasteurized, so you get that authentic and quality live culture goodness in ya.

The main reason other raw kombuchas must be kept refrigerated is because they still contain sugar, which will continue to ferment in the bottle if left unrefrigerated. This can cause a build-up of pressure and potential elevated alcohol content. Remedy is different because we brew out ALL of the sugar, which means there is no risk of refermentation.

Unpasteurized, raw kombucha doesn’t have to be refrigerated if it has no sugar like Remedy. It’s a myth that authentic kombucha always need to be refrigerated – fermentation does happen in a warm environment, after all!

All of our fermented drinks are best served chilled, but they can be stored at room temperature. This is because Remedy drinks contain no sugar and no sugar means there’s no risk of re-fermentation. Our authentic, unpasteurized kombucha contains healthy, strong, happy live cultures that stay alive throughout shelf life.

Each serving of Remedy Kombucha has less than 10mg of caffeine per 100ml because it’s brewed with tea, which is very low. To put it in perspective, coffee can contain anywhere between 60-110mg of caffeine (or even more!) depending on how strongly it is brewed.

All Remedy drinks are non-alcoholic. When it comes to Remedy Kombucha, a trace amount of alcohol can be produced during the natural fermentation process. We thoroughly test each and every batch to ensure that this does not go above 0.5% as per national standards for non-alcoholic drinks.

The live cultures in every Remedy drink are extremely strong, healthy and happy. When it comes to Remedy Kombucha, this is because we follow an old-school, long-aged brewing process using a relative of the same live culture that we used for our very first batch.

The brewing process happens in a warm environment and our testing has shown the live cultures not only survive but thrive right throughout shelf life, with absolutely no difference in quantity or quality whether kept in or out of the fridge.

If you’re concerned, pour your kombucha into a glass and let it sit in a warm place for a few days. If you used a Remedy Kombucha, a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast aka “the mother”) will form.

The SCOBY stands for: Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. Also referred to as the ‘mother’, this is the living culture that makes kombucha so special. A great analogy is to think of it as the ‘home’ for the good bacteria and healthy yeasts that magically transform tea into kombucha.

Strands or small pieces of our live kombucha SCOBY or ‘mother’ are signs of a natural, healthy and happy kombucha culture that is raw, unpasteurized and full of goodness. They are perfectly normal and safe and a sign you are drinking the real deal.

All Remedy drinks contain no sugar because we brew our bevvies the old school way. When brewing Remedy Kombucha, raw organic sugar is used as a key starter ingredient acting as food for the all-important live cultures. During our 30-day long aged brewing process, all of this sugar is converted into healthy organic acids leaving no sugar (and we test each batch to make sure of it.) We also carefully select all the natural ingredients we use for extra flavour, ensuring no sugar is added to any of our Remedy drinks.

Live cultures can improve gut health because they can increase the diversity of your gut flora, or gut microbiota, aka the microorganisms or bugs that live in your gut. They work together as a symbiotic community to get things working as they should and can also prevent the opportunistic growth of bag bugs. So, the more diversity in there, the better things will work!

When brewing Remedy, it’s not just magic that leads to a delicious drink with no sugar, but fermentation science! You see, the live culture is what consumes all the sugar, but in the process, it doesn’t just disappear, it gets converted into healthy organic acids, also known as short-chain fatty acids, the very same kind produced by our own gut bacteria to aid important body processes.

Without getting too technical or scientific, organic acids can help to:

  • Regulate appetite
  • Prevent the overgrowth of bad pathogenic bacteria
  • Provide an energy source for the good bacteria in your gut
  • Stabilize blood sugar levels
  • Regulate cholesterol

Most kombucha brands have over 10g of sugar per serving, but Remedy Kombucha is totally sugar free because it’s all brewed out during the 30-day brewing process.

Yes, Remedy Kombucha has no sugar. During our 30-day long-aged brewing process, all of the sugar is converted into healthy organic acids (and we test each batch to make sure of it.)

Everyone knows that a cup of green tea is good for you, right? (Just ask your gran) Well, that’s because it’s packed with tea antioxidants, aka polyphenols, which can help your body fight illness.

In kombucha making, the first and very important step at Remedy is to brew a VERY big pot of tea. That’s where these mighty tea polyphenols come in!

Not all kombucha brews will have the same amount of polyphenols. Some tea blends have less or more polyphenols depending on quality, and this can even be impacted by what season the tea was harvested.

Polyphenols also vary on the tea type (i.e green, black, oolong, jasmine or hibiscus). We use a mixture of certified organic green tea for its high polyphenol properties and certified organic black tea for its rich superior taste.

Most importantly, we test every batch of raw tea at Remedy to ensure it meets our high standards of the goods when it comes to polyphenols. We then test each batch of kombucha at the end of fermentation to make sure it meets our top-notch standards for polyphenol goodness.

If you want to check if your kombucha is chock-full of tea polyphenols, pour your brew into a glass. Tea has a brownish background color, so watch out if you find a kombucha that’s crystal clear.

The benefits of kombucha essentially come down to three key components: live cultures, organic acids, and antioxidants in the form of tea polyphenols. Combined, these three powerhouses help to support our all-important gut health as well as overall health and wellbeing.

The traditional method of making kombucha – which we follow at Remedy – involves a natural fermentation of sweet tea with a live culture. The live culture is known as a SCOBY, which stands for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast.

It’s super simple to test whether your kombucha is alive! Pour it into a glass and let it sit in a warm place for a few days. If you use Remedy Kombucha, a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast aka ‘the mother’) will form. Yeah huh. Pretty amazing stuff.

In a nutshell, kombucha (often lovingly referred to as “booch”) is fermented tea. The natural fermentation of sweet tea with a live culture. The live culture is known as a SCOBY, which stands for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast. The result is a sparkling drink that contains the goodness of live cultures, tea polyphenols and organic acids.
